PRENATAL DENTAL CARE
Pregnancy is both an exciting and stressful time for new parents. Expectant mothers work hard to eat right, avoid bad habits, and take other steps to care for the baby before birth. However, one aspect it might be easy to overlook during this busy time is prenatal dental care.
La Jolla dentist Dr. Jacob Russell welcomes adults and children to his practice, and he is pleased to provide a range of hygiene services to help pregnant women enjoy optimal oral health prior to the due date. Please call (858) 459-4113 to learn more about prenatal dental care in the San Diego area.
Prenatal Dental Care 101: How Is Oral Health Affected by Pregnancy?
A healthy mouth is an asset at any stage of life. However, for a mom-to-be it is both very important to maintain oral health and, in many cases, more difficult to do so.
Due to hormone changes, women are at a higher risk of developing gum disease when they are pregnant. The problem is pervasive enough that “pregnancy gingivitis” is a problem recognized by dentists like Dr. Russell.
In addition to being painful, research suggests that women who develop gum disease during pregnancy are more likely to experience premature labor and/or give birth to a baby who is underweight.
If a pregnant woman experiences these symptoms, it’s important to visit the dentist as soon as possible:
- Tender gums
- Gums that bleed easily
- Inflamed gum tissue – the gums look red instead of pink
Dr. Russell will revise dental treatment to accommodate you during pregnancy. The goal of our La Jolla dental team is to minimize discomfort and the risk of oral health issues to preserve the well-being of mother and baby.
How Can I Keep My Mouth Healthy During Pregnancy?
Proper oral hygiene, like brushing, flossing, and choosing healthy foods, is just as critical during pregnancy as it is at any other time of life. If anything, since you’re essentially caring for two people, diligence is even more important.
Keeping regular appointments with your dentist is also important. Depending on your needs, Dr. Russell might suggest coming to our La Jolla office before the recommended six months.
During your appointment, Dr. Russell will thoroughly inspect your gum tissue, gum line, and teeth for any issues. Though our office is outfitted with a digital X-ray machine that emits only a fraction of the radiation of traditional radiographs, no X-rays will be taken until after your baby’s delivery. Likewise, Dr. Russell will also refrain from performing dental treatments beyond teeth cleanings and exams except in an emergency situation.
If you’re an expecting mother, Dr. Russell and his dentistry team will make your prenatal oral health and the safety of your baby a top priority. Please contact us online to schedule a consultation. We are pleased to see patients in and around La Jolla, San Diego, and other areas of Southern California.
